Distance learning for Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park schools on Tues., Apr. 13

Distance learning for Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park schools on Tues., Apr. 13

A message from Supt. Cory McIntyre

I’m writing to update you on learning plans for tomorrow, Tuesday, April 13, and to share some thoughts and resources as our communities struggle to process the fatal police shooting of Daunte Wright last weekend.

Distance learning for Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park schools again tomorrow

First, given the information we have as of late this afternoon, tomorrow will be another distance learning day for our physical schools located in the cities of Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park. Kidstop and after-school and evening activities for those schools are again canceled. Our goal with this decision is to help ensure the safety of students and staff in the areas where there is the greatest potential for concern, as evidenced by the current heightened presence of law enforcement due to public safety concerns.

Again, the move to distance learning affects only physical schools located in the cities of Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park, and it is a decision made out of an abundance of caution with safety in mind. If your student lives in Brooklyn Center or Brooklyn Park but attends school in Maple Grove or Osseo, they will attend school as usual tomorrow.

Students will return to in-person learning at those schools on Wednesday, unless I let you know otherwise.

Free meals will be available for affected students

Meals for students affected by tomorrow’s shift to distance learning at designated schools can be picked up curbside from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the front entrance of the Educational Service Center, 11200 93rd Ave N, Maple Grove.

Hennepin County curfew

This news affects all district residents: Gov. Tim Walz has ordered a curfew for all residents of Hennepin County from 7 p.m. tonight to 6 a.m. tomorrow. Please make sure your children are aware and kept safe at home for the duration of the curfew.

Thoughts and resources for support

I extend my most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Daunte Wright, who was killed by a Brooklyn Center police officer on Sunday. Our communities are suffering, and our hearts are breaking. Mr. Wright’s tragic death, occurring at the same time that George Floyd’s homicide is being recounted on a daily basis in the criminal trial of Derek Chauvin, fills me with tremendous grief.

We are here to support your child. Your student may need help processing devastating events like this. I want you to know that our support staff are ready and able to help students talk through their feelings. Your child can request assistance from any of their teachers, who will put them in touch with support.

As parents/caregivers, you may find the following resources helpful (shared by the Minnesota Dept. of Education [MDE]):

Final thoughts

Please know that we stand with our students, staff and families of color, and we will continue to advance our district’s equity work toward its intended outcome of transformational change. I invite you to participate with us in that work by engaging in courageous conversations about race; consider registering for the annual Community Forum on Race next week.

As you’ve heard me say before, and I believe it so strongly that I’ll say it again, our district’s core values affirm that everyone has equal intrinsic value, and everyone benefits when cultural differences are acknowledged and understood and individuals are treated respectfully and equitably.

Respectfully,

Cory McIntyre
Superintendent
